November 2022 On Being a Good Citizen
Nov 12, 2022
Have you started picking up one piece of rubbish a day when you are out on your daily walk? If so you may havre noticed that other things beside rubbish are often dropped or misplaced. These can be items of clothing, wallets, watches, jewellery, sums of money or toys. I’m sure you can think of other items of value that have been lost.
Being a good citizen you will attempt to return these items to their owner. You may pick uo an item of clothing or toy and leave it on a nearby fence or bench where it can be easily seen, in case the person returns to look for it. If you find an item with an address or phone number in it such as a wallet.or a day timer you can attempt to return the item directly to the owner. Other valuable items such as watches or jewellery or large bank notes you can hand in to the police.
One day I was at the beach and my hotel room key fell out of my pocket into the sand. A young boy who was nearby actually saw me drop the key picked it up and gave it to his mother who returned it to me. What a good citizen that young boy was! If you see someone drop something be a good citizen, pick it up and return it to them.
So you pick up rubbish when you are out on your daily walk but there are other places you may find rubbish when you are out of the house for example shops, community buildings such as libraries or in the grounds of an apartment complex or office corridor. Be a good citizen and pick up the rubbish or other item you find there as well.
Frequently I am in a grocery store or department store and I find something lying on the ground that has fallen off a shelf or rack. I pick these items up and return them to the shelf or rack. This is also being a good citizen or community member. We all appreciate places that are neat and tidy. This is taking care of the environment in which we live and is being a good neighbour
Of course if you practise with the Spruce Initiative and pick up one piece of rubbish while you are out on your daily walk you are practising good citizenship. You become a steward of the environment. It helps all of us. It beautifies the environment and makes it clean and healthy.
Do be judicious about what you pick up. Some things such as masks and other dirty items are better left to professionals who are prepared to pick up hazardous waste. Also remember to use sanitiser and wash your hands when you get to your destination..
Thank you for all you do.
Cheers, Felicity
Clean and green is our motto. Remember: one piece a day sends the rubbish away! Don’t just clean let’s Spruce.
