December 2022 Giving Back to the Earth
December 2022 Giving Back to the Earth
Dec 12, 2022
Almost all cultures celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of the new year. In our tradition Christmas is celebrated at the winter solstice. We decorate our homes for the holidays and give each other presents. On January 5 th we take down our decorations and Spruce up our homes in preparation for the year ahead.
At the Spruce Iniiative we take this opportunity to give back to the planet by the planting of a tree. This may be our Christmas tree or it maybe a tree planted elsewhere on the planet.
Just imagine if the billions of Christians planted just one tree a year each instead of throwing one away after the holidays. How quickly our forests would be restored! This is how one small action by an individual when multiplied by many people can create a huge positive effect.
Just as picking up one piece of rubbish a day when we are out on our daily walks can lead to a clean and healthy environment so too the planting of one tree a year can lead to control of climate change and a healthy and beautiful planet. Even if we only give one tree a year to the planet, if many people do the same it can have a huge positive effect on the environment.
As we realise the toll our modern living takes on the planet we look for ways to reduce our footprint. One way to do this is by purchasing offsets. We can offset our carbon emissions by planting trees and native wildlife habitat. This is good for climate change, good for making the oxygen which we breathe and good for the animals whose habitats are restored.
Why not make an annual gift to the planet to offeset your impact on the environment? Even planting one tree a year can have a lasting positive effect. It doesn’t have to break the bank. In many places on the planet you can plant a tree for as little as $5 a tree! In some places it only costs $1.
Planting trees in the city helps to protect the ozone layer, reduces the temperature in hot climates and leads to a beautiful environment. I love all the cherry blossoms in Vancouver city in the spring. They create an annual display. Planting trees in the country can restore wildlife habitat and save endangered species like the koalas in Australia whose numbers were drastically reduced due to the terrible bush fires.
Why not join us at the Spruce Initiative on January 5 th and make one of your annual traditions the planting of a tree? If you want to do more you can always purchase offsets and save wildlife habitat as well.
Cheers, Felicity
Clean and green is our motto. Remember: one piece a day sends the rubbish away! Don’t just clean let’s Spruce.
