January 2023 New Beginnings

How was your International Spruce Day? Did you plant your first tree or donate funds to a reforestation initiative? A good way to celebrate is to purchase offsets for your carbon emissions. There are many organisations that will plant trees and restore wildlife habitats.

So you planted your first tree. You”ve made a good start. Congratulations! Just one tree a year over time will make a forest. Maybe you didn’t plant a tree. The tree went in the rubbish or your Christmas tree was plastic and you are still thinking about it. Have a good think.

Planting a single tree every year for a lifetime would make a grove. It does make a difference. It shows you care for the planet Earth our home, it helps purify the air and makes wildlife a home. Did you plant a fruit or nut tree in an underdeveloped country? In addition to the above it also provides food for hungry people. There’s no time like the present to start giving back to Nature..

Just think about it. One tree a year planted by many people is a lot of forests and wildlife habitat restored and a lot of people fed. If half the 2 billion or so Christians in the world planted one tree a year each that would be one billion trees every year! And it would make a huge difference to the planet. What a good time to start practising with the Spruce initiative. You too can help clean and beautify our planet.

So you want to start picking up one piece of rubbish a day while you are out on your daily walk. It is easy. It costs nothing and takes no extra time out of your day. Go ahead. You will be surprised at the lessons you learn.

So now you started picking up your one piece of rubbish a day while you were out walking the dog. You did so every day for three months or three weeks or even three days and then you stopped. Now you just don’t feel like it. You think you might get germs from the rubbish. There was no bin handy and you had to take the rubbish home. Maybe you forgot your hand sanitiser and you didn’t want to risk it, There are a myriad of reasons why you would stop picking up your one piece of rubbish a day.

Maybe you started taking a bag and picking up more rubbish and it got too much. Maybe there was a big pile of rubbish and you didn’t think you could make a difference. Don’t give up. The Spruce Initiative is a daily walk practice.. Go out on your walk and look around. Enjoy the weather. Look at the scenery. Observe where the rubbish is in your neighbourhood. Give your self permission to do a reconnaissance trip.

So you didn’t practise for a while. Give yourself permission to start again. Just doing one piece helps your community stay clean and healthy and sets a good example for others to follow. Pick up just one piece of rubbish a day and give back to Nature by planting one tree a year and our planet will be clean and green in no time. Remember our motto: one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean, let’si Spruce!

Cheers,
Felicity
