April 2023 Comments on this Year’s Earthday Theme
Apr 13, 2023
This month at the Spruce Initiative we are commenting on the Earth Day 2023 theme which is the importance of education about the environment. Education about our environment is essential if we are all to take up our roles as stewards of our environment.
At an early age we are taught to keep ourselves and our homes and schools clean and tidy. As we grow as people we become aware that we are also members of a wider community and have a duty of care to that environment as well. Education is key to this. No one likes to live in a mess.
The Spruce Initiative seeks to be a platform for environmental advocacy. If you seek to make yourself a healthy meal you need to first clean the pot you used to cook the previous night’s dinner. If you want a healthy planet to live on you must first clean up the environment, make it fit for habitation and tend it.
People have widely differing views on what constitutes a fit environment for life on this planet of ours. At the Spruce Initiative we don’t seek to tell you what your should think. We are simply providing you with information you need to make an informed choice on what are the first steps to a healthy environment. Clean and green is our strategy. We seek to become stewards of our environment and good citizens of our planet.
By setting a good example and being prepared to pick up just one piece of rubbish when you are out on your daily walk and disposing of it appropriately, you are educating by example. Developing the habit, or tradition if you like, of giving back to the planet by planting a tree annually and passing on that tradition is also educating by example.
The Spruce Initiative practice is itself an education tool. It teaches you to become aware of your environment and to become a custodian of that environment. It teaches stewardship. We learn by doing and by observation. As we grow we pass on what we have learnt.
When you engage in a daily walk practise with a view to paying attention to your environment you don’t just learn to pick up rubbish. You learn many other things or at least we have. We seek to pass some of those things on here without trying to spoil the journey for you. We encourage you to try our practise and see what you learn. It may surprise you.
Do consider joining our initiative and advocating for a clean and healthy environment with us. Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean: let’s Spruce.
Cheers, Felicity
Clean and green is our motto. Remember: one piece a day sends the rubbish away! Don’t just clean let’s Spruce.
