October 2023 A Case for More Waste Receptacles

Oct 12, 2023

Have you ever sat at a bus stop and eaten an icecream or a fast food meal? What did your u do with the rubbish left after your meal? We hope that you took it with you: Frequently I have passed bus stops and noticed fast food rubbish on the seat there. It is a common thing to do to eat a smeal whille waiting for a bus or other public transport.

Wouldn’t it be helpful to have a waste receptacle at every bus stop? It would be very convenient for people who eat meals while waiting for a bus. It would save taking the rubbish with you or worse leaving it at the bus stop.

One council in Sydney actually removed all waste receptacles from their public spaces. The theory was that rubbish blew out of them and if there were no public receptacles people would take their rubbish with them and the streets would be cleaner. You guessed it! This strategy didn’t work. People were annoyed when there were no rubbish receptacles handy and dropped rubbish on the street.

It was a common topic of conversation in neighbouring suburbs that there were no rubbish bins on the streets of their neighbour. Having waste receptacles handy in public places was found to keep those places cleane.

Modern designs for public waste receptacles incorporate covers which prevent the wind from blowing rubbish out of the bin. Frequently receptacles are provided for rubbish which goes to landfill and rubbish which can be recycled. In our opinion this is an excellent idea.

Especially in areas where there are fast food restaurants and cafes it is a good idea to have plenty of waste receptacles. Also where there are shops or offices it is important to install waste receptacles.

Many people who work in offices take their lunch with them from home and need a place to throw the rubbish left over from lunch. We need plenty of rubbish bins in schools and colleges for the same reason. In fact we need waste receptacles anywhere people congregate.

Parks are another place where we need plenty of waste receptacles as people picnic and camp there and walk their dogs.

In addition if you practise with the Spruce Initiative and pick up one piece of rubbish a day it is handy to have a convenient waste receptacle. Having convenient waste receptacles actually encourages people to pick up rubbish as they make the association between the bin and the rubbish.

We encourage you too advocate for rubbish bins at all public transport stops and adequate waste rexlceptacles on streets, in parks and at the beach.

Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean: let’s Spruce!

Felicity
