Giving Thanks and The Spruce Initiative
Giving Thanks and The Spruce Initiative
Oct 7, 2024
This time of year in North America as we approach the holiday season we look at ways of giving thanks for the bounty of the fall harvest. In Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October. Our families gather around and we eat turkey and apple pies. We give thanks for the bounty of the harvest.
Giving Thanks is an integral part of the Spruce Initiative philosophy. Every year we say thank you to the planet by planting a tree.for International Spruce Day which is January 5 th each year. This marks the end of the holiday season and is the traditional day for taking down Christmas decorations.
This holiday season instead of cutting down a tree or purchasing an artificial tree why not plant a tree. If we choose to cut down a tree for the holiday season we are are taking away a tree which is making oxygen for us to breathe and purifying the air. If we plant a tree instead we are choosing to give back to life on our planet with a gift that sustains life.
If you do want a Christmas tree in the house why not consider buying one in a pot and planting it after the holidays on International Spruce Day.
Many people buy artificial trees which will one day end up in landfill. Plastic trees lead to a waste of resources and cause pollution in both manufacture and landfill. Planting a tree helps restore wildlife habitat, beautify the environment, provides cooling in cities, removes carbon from the atmosphere and provides oxygen.
At a time when we should be downsizing cities and removing vehicles from cities it has been found in Western Sydney planting trees in the new suburbs will result in lowering the summer temperature there by 5 degrees. This is a good first step to addressing climate change. It also shows what a difference reforestation can make.
It is critical for climate change to reduce the carbon emissions, pollution and city heat in cities around the world. To do this we need to remove cars from the cities, reduce air conditioning load by designing sustainable buildings and plant trees and native wildlife habitat.
This holiday season please consider joining the Spruce Initiative. Adopt a sustainable approach to making our planet a cleaner and greener place. When you are out on your daily walk commit to sustainable cleaning by being prepared to pick up one piece of rubbish a day. And celebrate the close of the holiday season by giving thanks to the Earth.
Clean and Green is our motto. Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean, let’s Spruce!
Cheers, Felicity
