Fresh Starts and the Spruce Initiative

Jan 18, 2025

. The holiday season is over and most of us are returning to our everyday lives, preparing to send the children back to school or for some school has already started. We all know about New Year’s resolutions. It is the time of year, in harmony with the seasons, for making fresh starts.

We hope you considered planting a tree for International Spruce Day. A tree has long been part of the Christian holiday tradition and we hope you will join us in creating a new tradition, celebrating the end of the year and the beginning of a new one with a gift of life to the planet.

In these days of climate change that are upon us we need to take time to reflect on our lives and how we as humans are part of the planetary ecosystems. We are all trainee custodians of life on the planet and as more is given to us so more responsability is expected of us.

As we embark on a New Year we need to reflect on what worked in the past year and what didn’t or what needed to be changed. We need to plot a new trajectory for the new year and do our best to live lightly on the land. Can we commit to a clean and green planet? Can we become part of the solution instead of part of the problem?

At the Spruce Initiative we suggest a simple clean and green strategy that is sustainable and is a first step towards being a responsible citizen on the Earth. It is about taking the Initiative towards sustainable lives on the Earth. Do join us in being prepared to do a good turn for the environment everyday by picking up one piece of rubbish everyday when you are out on your daily walk and planting one tree a year.

As we have previously explained there are many ways you can engage in planting trees and many reputable organisations which will plant them for you. We in more affluent countries may choose to plant trees for food or trees for shade and to restore wildlife habitat in those communities that are less affluent. As more has been given to us we have a responsibility to take care of our neighbours.

It’s time to take climate change seriously and to take baby steps towards sustainable lives on the planet. We need to keep our planet clean to sustain a healthy environment, We need to learn how to live lightly on the land. Rubbish and over use of petroleum by products poison our streets, natural evvirnments and waterways.

I only learnt recently that the oceans are responsible for about 50% of the oxygen production on the planet. Keeping our planet clean will help to ensure our oceans continue to support life on he planet and continue to produce life giving oxygen. Do try to cut down on plastics where you can for instance. Every bit helps. Following The Spruce Initiative is an action you can take in the present to help ensure a sustainable solution for the future. It is a self righting strategy which if followed is a first step lto sustainable life on our planet.

So with our clean and green strategy we are prepared to do a little bit of cleaning everyday and give a gift to the planet every year by planting a tree. It is a start. It does lead to environmental awareness and is what every good citizen of the planet needs to be prepared to do.

We remind you that if you need to stay indoors do a bit of tidying or a little bit or cleaning and polishing. Tackle one job you have been putting off. Take care of your indoor environment. And commit to celebrating the passage of the seasons by celebrating International Spruce Day.p each year.

We wish you well on your journey this coming year and hope that you will consider making The Spruce Initiative part of your life.

Cheers,
Felicity
