The Spruce Initiative celebrates World Oceans Day

Jun 13, 2024

June 8 th was World Oceans Day. Did you know that according to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration) 50% of the world’s oxygen is produced by plants, algae and bacteria in the ocean? And according to the NOAA 50% of the world oxygen is consumed by marine life.

NOAA have found that dead marine creatures and pollution can overwhelm the photosynthesising organisms in some areas and create what are called dead zones. It is important not to overload the life giving organisms s in the ocean. The oceans are an important part of our planetary ecosystem. Sea creatures need the oxygen that is produced to live.

By picking up rubbish and disposing of it appropriately we can help keep our oceans healthy. Rubbish that is not picked up eventually finds its way to the ocean and may choke marine creatures and pollute the water.

There has been a lot of studies on how micro plastic particles have been found in the oceans. It is becoming more important than ever to dispose of plastics appropriately as they can leach into ground water and pollute our oceans.

When you are out on your daily walk see if you can pick up some plastic and dispose of it appropriately. Do your part in helping to keep our oceans healthy and marine creatures safe.

We also suggest you pick up candy wrappers and chip bags as these may be mistaken by marine creatures for fish. They are not biodegradable and remaining the ocean until they are fished out.

Do your part to protect our oceans and make them sustainable. Maybe if you live on the Coast take a walk along yhe beach or the seashore and pick up rubbish that has been dropped there or washed ashore. Do your bit to keep our waterways clean and healthy.

If you live inland see if you can take a walk by a river or lake. All water eventually finds it’s way back to the oceans carriying with it pollution and rubbish that has found it’s way there.

We realise that one person alone can’t eliminate all the rubbish however if enough people are prepared to pick up a piece of rubbish a day and dispose of it appropriately then a sustainable system is created and the rubbish problem goes.

And do consider planting a tree every year. Restoring forests and wildlife habitat makes for a sustainable environment.

Clean and green is our motto. Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean let’s Spruce.

Cheers,
Felicity
