Leaving Only Footprints
Leaving Only Footprints
Jul 13, 2024
Leave only footprints is a good philosophy. Footprints in the sand along the beach are washed away by the tide and those left in the forest or on the meadow are covered by the wind, rain and vegetation. So when we walk in Nature we must do so conscious of our impact on the environment.
When we walk in the natural environment it is a sad fact that on occasion we come across rubbish. We encourage you to be an aware citizen when you are in the natural environment and be prepared to pick up a piece of rubbish a day when you are out on your hike. Leave only footprints. Take away the rubbish and dispose of it appropriately.
It is important to pick up rubbish which has been left in the natural environment for a number of reasons. It is unhealthy. Wildlife may choke on it. It mars the beauty of Nature. Do the right thing and pick it up. Be a welcome visitor to natural places and do the right thing. Leave the natural environment a little better than you found it.
At the Soruce Initiative we commit to being a friend to Nature by planting one tree a year to celebrate International Spruce Day. We are committed to restoring wildlife habitat and to reducing our carbon footprint. Our carbon footprint is the load of greenhouse gases that we generate going about our daily lives. These gases contribute to climate change. A carbon footprint is a footprint we want to eliminate by reducing the activities which generate greenhouse gases. Planting trees and restoring wildlife habitat is a way of giving back to Nature and offsetting carbon emissions.
Greenhouse gases are photosynthesised by plants, including trees, on land and by plants, algae, plankton and bacteria in water. When we deplete our forests for farmland we increase the load on the environment as trees are the major contributers to neutralising carbon emissions and producing oxygen which we need to breathe.
Logging forests also destroys wildlife habitat. At the Spruce Initiative we are committed to replacing what we take from Nature and to living sustainably. The practise of the Spruce Initiative is a place to start. It is a start towards sustaianability. It is a start towards creating a beautiful natural and built environment. It is about being aware of your enivironment and your impact on that environment. It is about learning to be a custodian of your environment and to being environmentally aware,
By engaging in sustainable practises such as reducing our use of plastics and synthetic clothe, taking public transport where possible and eating less meat and eating sustainably sourced fish we can reduce our carbon emissions and reduce the impact our lives have on the environment.
Unlike footprints in the sand our carbon footprints need to be eliminated. Live in harmony with nature and take your first invisible sreps towards a sustainable future for our planet. Time is of the essence. The sooner we take steps towards sustainability the sooner we can arrest climate change and enjoy a beautiful natural and built world.
Clean and Greemis our motto, Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean let’s Spruce.
Cheers, Felicity
