Spruce with a Buddy

While joining the Spruce Initiative is an individual endeavour (you pledge to pick up one piece of rubbish when you are out on your daily walk and to plant one tree every year) enlisting a buddy to join you can help you to keep your pledge. You and your buddy can meet and go on your daily walk together. This helps keep you motivated.

You can also enlist your buddy’s assistance and your community’s assistance in planting trees. You can plant a tree in your garden, on your street, in your community, restore wildlife habitat or plant a tree in another community anywhere in the world.

Picking up rubbish and disposing of it appropriately is a first step towards environmental awareness and sustainable living. By disposing of rubbish appropriately we mean recycling where possible to keep rubbish out of landfill. If you come across hazardous waste of any sort alert your local council.

Where rubbish has accumulated you and your buddy can organise a cleaning bee, or alert the local council to enlist the aid of a professional street cleaner. Regardless what is important is that you continue to be prepared to pick up a piece of rubbish every day. The daily walk has an added benefit of being good for your health. It is a walking meditation and trains your awareness of your surroundings.

We remind you not to get too caught up in chasing rubbish which has blown onto the road. Sometimes you need to let a piece go. Maybe some days you can decide to pick up something plastic. Plastic bags and chip and candy wrappers and bags are hazardous to marine life as they can be mistaken for food.

Plastic bags which are not picked up eventually find their way to the ocean where they accumulate.

If you spread the word about the Spruce Initiative you can increase your impact on the environment. Being prepared to pick up one piece of rubbish a day is something every responsible citizen should be prepared to do. It leads to an environment that stays clean and eliminates the need for cleaning bees. It leads to pride in your neighbourhood. And if you are prepared to pick up a piece of rubbish a day you are not going to be dropping it. You become part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

We suggest you invite a buddy out for a walk, pick up a piece of rubbish and explain about the Spruce Initiative. Chances are your buddy will think it is a good idea and follow suit. Do consider adding your names to the lists of practitioners on the website. It is a good way to network with other likeminded advocates for the environment. It is a source off pride and helps you to stay on track.

If you have a number of buddies you can join the Spruce Initiative as a community and you can tell about your community and your .green initiatives. The Spruce Initiative was designed as a green networking hub.
You can be listed anonymously although we hope you will stand up and be counted as advocates for the environment.

All too often we think something such as the Spruce Initiative is a good idea and we do it for a while and then stop. Having a Sprucing buddy helps keep you both on track as does joining on the website.

I have talked to lots of people who say they pick up rubbish but it is consistency that the Spruce Initiative fosters and leads to the environment staying clean and green all the time.

Do consider joining us in Sprucing up the environment. Clean and green is our motto. Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean let’s Spruce!

Cheers,
Felicity
