Cleaning Bees

Mar 13, 2025

Cleaning Bees are essential in keeping our environments clean by picking up rubbish that has accumulated over time. Cleaning Bees go hand in hand with the practise of the Spruce Initiative.

This month Sunday March 2 nd marked the 35 th annual Clean Up Australia Day. Clean Up Australia Day, which is the first Sunday in March each year, was started by Ian Kieran in 1990. According to the Clean Up Australia website an estimated 1 million people took part this year. Congratulations to all those who took part for a job well done!

Cleaning bees are always a good idea to clean up rubbish that has accumulated and we congratulate those who take part in the clean ups. But what to do to keep your community clean after your cleaning bee?

We maintain that the Spruce Initiative goes hand in hand with cleaning bees as it helps to keep your environment free from rubbish all the time.

So you’ve cleaned up your environment with a cleaning bee. Don’t wait another year to have another cleaning bee. Join us at the Spruce Initiative and pick up one piece of rubbish a day when you are out on your daily walk.

We also invite you to go a step further not to just clean but to Spruce up your environment. Join us in making our environments beautiful and healthy by planting a tree for International Spruce Day, January 5 th each year.

International Spuce Day marks the end of the holiday season when we take down our holiday decorations and prepare for the New Year.

If you choose to make an ongoing improvement to your environment by engaging in an annual cleaning bee such as Clean Up Australia or It’s offshoot Clean Up the World Weekend, the third weekend in September each year, and you practise with the Spruce Initiative and pick up a piece of rubbish every day we think you will notice your environment is cleaner each year.

Eventually it is our hope that when people choose to be good citizens and commit to picking up a piece of rubbish every day that the need for cleaning bees will be greatly reduced. Imagine if the million people who took part in this year’s Clean Up Australia Day also committed to picking up a piece of rubbish every day when they are out on their daily walks?

It stands to reason that this practise would result in an environment that is clean all the time and a healthier population from walking every day. In addition planting trees leads to a sustainable green environment.

Clean and green is our motto. One piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean, let’s Spruce.

Cheers,
Felicity
